10 Ways To Give Your Home Decor More Personality

10 Ways To Give Your Home Decor More Personality

Giving your home decor more personality can be a really fun project for just about any homeowner! The great thing about this is that it’s your opportunity to show off your likes and hobbies, and really get creative with the things that you choose to include in your home. Below you’ll find 10 ways to give your home decor more personality for inspiration:

  1. Mix Up Some Patterns That You Really Like

Start by figuring out how you can utilize and mix up some patterns that you really like. Using patterns in the home is a great way to give it some texture and interest, and mixing them can look really cool providing you do it carefully. So, for example:

  • Start with three patterns. An odd number is better than an even number and three is more manageable than say, five or more. You don’t want it to look like you’ve just mindlessly splashed patterns everywhere.

  • Pick patterns that you can include in different amounts. It will usually work well if you include one 60%, one 30%, and one 10%.

  • Choosing patterns of different scales often works well.

  • Colored patterns look good with monochrome patterns.

  • A couple of ideas include: florals and stripes, geometric and animal prints, and polka dots with just about anything!

2. Don’t Use Matching Furniture

Going to the store and buying a set of matching furniture can seem like the done thing, but actually, it’s pretty lazy. You can have a lot of fun mixing up furniture pieces, and this automatically gives your home some personality and interest. All you need to do is either make sure they are of a similar style, or color. Make sure you consider whether the pieces you are looking at will add harsh lines or soft lines to your room and what sort of effect that will give it.

Once you have your furniture in place, don’t forget to figure out the arrangement carefully. Don’t just shove it against the wall, as this rarely looks best and is uncreative.

When it comes to the features of your home that you’re not looking to replace, you can simply choose to freshen them up. Look at a cabinet refinishing company and you may be able to make your cabinets look brand new - no need to go hunting for new cabinets and spend a fortune!

3. Add Artwork

Artwork should be in every household - this is your opportunity to really show off your personality and things that you like. See if there’s a local artist who could commission you some work, or even see if you could paint something yourself to save some money! You might be able to throw together a cool looking abstract for a fraction of the price. You may even be able to find some artwork second hand. It’s up to you whether you go for a big focal piece or mix up smaller pieces for a more eclectic vibe.

4. Add Antiques And Thrifted Items

Antiques and thrifted items are a wonderful addition to any home, as very few homes are likely to have pieces like this present in the decor. You may be able to find something really unusual and cool when you go thrifting.

5. Repurpose Items For Unexpected Use

You can repurpose all kinds of old items for unexpected use. You can do a lot with old wooden crates, for example, old suitcases, and other old items. Many of these just need a little TLC and they can become something beautiful and useful once more.

6. Show Off Your Hobbies

Find a way to show off your hobbies so that your home truly reflects your personality. This could be a great conversation starter!  Many of us confine our hobbies to hidden spaces in the home, but that is no fun! Instead, show off what you really love and a little more of you. Not only will you feel more at home, but it is one way to be surrounded with more things you enjoy - everything from your niche book collection, handmade artwork or candles, all One Piece Funko Pops plus some of the cool posters, or even your quills. The point is, no matter what it is that makes you happy - add some of it to your living space.

7. Don’t Forget About Your Garden

Your garden should have a great personality, too. Include furniture, artwork, figurines, and water features. Pay as much attention to it as you would the inside of your home. Your garden should be another safe space and an extension of your home.

8. Add Sentimental Items That Remind You Of The Good Times

Put up pictures and souvenirs from trips you’ve taken. Sentimental items will make you smile!

9. Add Your Favorite Flowers

Flowers look gorgeous and smell amazing, plus they make us happier just by looking at them. A subscription service can take a lot of the hassle out of buying flowers for you.

10. Paint Your Front Door

Let people know what sort of house they are entering right away by painting your door a vibrant color! Even a fresh coat of paint can look great.
