How To Store Your Jewelry

How To Store Your Jewelry

Fine jewelry needs to be stored correctly to keep it safe, secure, and looking beautiful. If you’re organizing your collection, try some of these tips to keep everything safe.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures and Humidity

Don’t store your jewelry anywhere that gets cold and drafty or hot and stuffy. Store your jewelry at room temperature, and out of direct sunlight, such as in a good jewelry box or a home safe. Choose somewhere that stays at a consistent low level of humidity to help stop it from tarnishing or discoloring. Different kinds of jewelry are more susceptible to temperature and humidity damae than others. Opals and cameos need more moisture in the air to prevent them from cracking.

Choose A Jewelry Box With A Soft Lining

There are lots of jewlery boxes on the market, but many are made of hard plastic or wood. For fine jewlery, this is not the best choice, and you should instead look for something that has a soft fabric lining. This way, if you drop your jewelry in at the end of the day, you don’t risk accidentally damaging the gemstones or the metal.

Make sure that the jewelry box or organizer that you have chosen has enough spaces to store all of your jewelry without them being too clumped up together. Jewelry that has clumped together is annoying to sort through and can get tangled and damaged that way.

Store Clean Jewelry In A Clean Location

This tip works for all kinds of jewelry, but is especially important for costume, silver, or gold-filled jewelry. The last thing that you want to do is store a piece of corroded copper jewelery that you bought at a thrift store next to the precious pieces that you inherited from your grandmother. The musty, corroded smell of the cheap piece could transfer onto your other jewelry, and it could also cause your other jewelry to tarnish more quickly too, and become corroded as well.

Even if your jewelry is clean, if you put it away in a dirty, dusty jewelry box, then your jewelry is likely to pick up these unpleasant smells and the dinginess of where you store it. Clean your jewelry box on a regular asis and make sure that area around it is clean, dry, and fresh-smellng, so your jewelry stays the same.

Use Hooks To Hang Necklaces

Lots of jewelry storage options come with doors on the either side that have hooks on them for you to hang your necklaces on. Use them. Hanging your necklaces vertically stops them from getting tangled together, kinked, or knotted. If you don’t have a jewlery armoire that has doors like this, then you can make a DIY option for hanging your necklaces safely. Get an old frame and add in a cork board. Use push pins to make hooks to hang your necklaces or easily tangled bracelets on. If you prefer to use a jewelry stand, then make sre the stand that you buy is tall enough to stop your necklaces from touching the surface you keep the stand on.
