How To Move Bulky Items
You might be moving things around your house, to a new home down the road, or across the globe. Most of the items you pack up are pretty light and can be moved easily.
A few bulky items cause more than their fair share of issues, though.
When it comes to bulky items, they might just be oversized, they could be very heavy, or a combination of the two.
The typical bulky furniture includes the following:
Swing sets
Large rugs
Bookshelves
Mattresses
Sofas
Bedrooms sets
Piano/harps / other large musical instruments
How to prepare for bulky item moving
The fastest way to get your bulky items moved with safety is to hire a specialist to take care of them. For music instruments that aren’t easy to break down, like pianos, for example, you should check out professional piano movers.
If you have hired a moving company, they will give you a clear set of instructions; most of the time, it will include some of the following:
Removal of the legs (and bag them up carefully)
Empty all of the drawers and shelves
Any loose components should be taped to the item
Remove doors when necessary
Wrap the item in a protective wrapping
Depending on the moving package you have purchased, your removals firm may do this for you; if you are DIYing it, be extra careful in your preparation.
Long-distance moving
The further the furniture needs to be shipped, the higher the precautions you need to take. The last thing you need halfway through your journey is the wrapping tearing, and damage to your large furniture items.
Here are some considerations for long-distance moving if you are handling it yourself:
Delicate parts and corners: corners are particularly likely to sustain some damage when moving. Most of the time, the damage is slight, but it can also mean the item's safety is impacted. Use corrugated cardboard as an extra layer of protection on all corners.
Wrap: Once the furniture is wrapped in blankets as the first layer of protection, consider adding an extra layer of plastic wrap. The plastic wrap stops the blankets from slipping and stops the furniture from getting dirty. Ensure you have some holes in the plastic so the furniture can breathe.
Mattress: The best thing is to buy a mattress box, and pad it with extra blankets. A mattress box also makes the lifting and carrying of your mattress easier.
Tools
Never underestimate the power of sliders, a heavy-duty hand truck, or a transport dolly. These can help you manage a lot, if not all, of your heaviest furniture.
Sliders can be as simple as a layer of plastic on the floor to help slide the furniture, or you might want to get a proper set of sliders.
Make sure that you have plenty of moving blankets instead of using regular blankets, as regular blankets aren’t designed to protect in the same way.
