Getting Ready To Take In A Lodger

Getting Ready To Take In A Lodger

It’s something that more and more people are doing, partly as a drive to try and improve their financial situation, and partly sometimes to help someone out who might be in a tricky spot. Either way and whatever the reason, having a lodger is one of those things that can be quite good for everyone involved in the situation, helping you financially and them with a roof over their heads. But there are a few things you will need to do to make sure that you're ready to take in a lodger. Let’s take a look at those right now.

Finding Permission To Take In A Lodger

Before you do anything else, you will need to make certain that you are actually allowed by law to take in a lodger. It might be that you need to seek permission from somewhere. There are certain types of tenancy where you are allowed, as the tenant, to take in a lodger, so you need to check whether that is true for you and then speak with your landlord. Likewise, if you are a homeowner, you may need to get the permission of the mortgage lender, if applicable. Either way, make sure you are seeking that permission so that you are doing it all above board.

Preparing A Room

The lodger is obviously going to need a room in order to make sure that they are actually comfortable and able to live there, so you will need to start preparing a room for them to stay in as soon as possible. There are a few essentials to focus on here to make sure that you are providing them with a room that they are going to be happy with. First of all, comfort - ensure that they have a secure and comfortable bed, lots of bedding, and a heater or radiator. You might want to get the AC contractor to come and install or fix up the AC too. The better the room, the happier the lodger will be.

Supplying Other Benefits

There are other benefits that you are going to want to make sure are supplied so that your lodger can be happy living with you. For instance, you might want to make sure that they are going to have all the relevant appliances and access to those appliances as well. If you have that in place, you are going to find that you are much more likely to have a happy lodger, which makes it a much better situation for everyone involved. With that in mind, you should absolutely ensure that you are going to have a much better living situation, and that you are not doing anything to put anybody out. So you need to consider anyone else who might live there as well.

Those are just some of the things to think about if you are thinking of taking in a lodger. As long as you are aware of these elements, you should find that it is relatively simple to take in a lodger.
