Some Springtime Gardening Tips for the Home

Some Springtime Gardening Tips for the Home

Spring is here, and the first snowdrops of the season are poking their heads through the topsoil, but that doesn’t mean you have missed the window for planting or getting your garden ready for the summer season. Use the gardening tips below to cultivate lovely flowerbeds for the summer.

Vegetables Garden

Do you want plenty of fresh vegetables to enjoy in the summer months? Now is the time to get the seeds planted. Early March is the best time to plant leafy vegetables like kale and lettuce, but other vegetables like potatoes and many fruits need to wait until the weather is a bit warmer.

If you have some vegetable or fruit seeds, plant them in some quality soil and water them indoors. Nurture the seedlings in the warm home until the start of summer, and then move them outside. Unusually fruits and vegetables are a good idea since you can usually buy the rest.

Weed Borders

When you return to your garden in the spring, you are sure to notice weeds in the cracks and borders. No matter how hard you try to prevent weeds in the garden, they are sure to appear. Whether blown by the wind, carried on the fur of a pet, or buried in the soil, the seeds arrive.

Spring is an excellent time to weed the garden and put down some weed killer to prevent more appearing in the coming months. Weeds can be unsightly and difficult to control, but if you make an effort to eradicate them whenever you see them and use quality topsoil, you should be fine.

Rose Bushes

Rose bushes are very sensitive and require pruning for better growth. If you want your rose bushes to grow healthy and strong in the summer, make sure you cut back any dead branches and flowers in the Spring. Spring pruning is fine but start the process as early as possible.

Make sure your garden is summer-ready by allowing your rose bushes to bloom at their best. Roses make a garden look pretty and inviting in the summer season, but their growth can be stunted by up to a third when you fail to prune them. So find some shears and get to work.

Topsoil Mulch

Whether you are planting new seeds, protecting your garden from weeds, or improving its appearance, you need some quality topsoil mulch. Quality topsoil is packed with nutrients to help your garden stay healthy and promote the growth of your vegetable and flower seeds.

Topsoil mulch improves the growth of your plants, but it also prevents soil erosion when it rains. Over time, soil loses its quality as the nutrients are soaked up and washed away, so try to analyze your soil in the spring and choose a quality topsoil mulch to layer over regular soil.

Flower Planting

While spring is often the time when we notice the emergence of flowers after the cold winter, it’s also an excellent time to plant some for summer. The best flowers to plant during spring include dahlias, anemones - a type of wildflower - calla lilies, and many more colorful and lovely flowers.
