Getting Your House Ready for Summer

Getting Your House Ready for Summer

We all know what it's like to be caught in a heat wave during the summer, and without being prepared properly you're going to find it hard to manage. No matter where you are in the world, summer is always a glorious time. Barbecues and beaches and plenty of things to do are exciting, but what do you do about your house?

Getting your house ready for summer with fixed and working air conditioning, as well as a decent entertainment deck outside will make you feel like you don't have to go too far, especially if you're not going on vacation this year. With that in mind, let's take a look at how you can get your house ready for the summer ahead.

  • Do an audit of your home. Look at the various aspects of your house where the heat is likely to seep in and the cold air is going to seek out. Checking the insulation in the attic, the basement, and in the walls is going to help you to see whether or not your home is able to maintain its temperature for the summer months. Have somebody come out and check your windows and doors to seal any gaps or cracks so that when you're running your air conditioning unit, you're not losing all of that cool air to the outside. You should also make sure that your roof is free from any damage or leaks, because during the winter the gutters would have built up and you don't need to have any broken pieces of your roof disturbing your summer.

  • Keep the blinds closed. It may feel like in the summer you want to throw open the curtains and let the sunlight shine in, and that's a lovely idea, but you need to think about making sure that you can keep the heat out of the house. You want to keep your home cool, and that means limiting how much sunshine comes in through the glass. Your house is already going to be hot enough with the sun beating down on the roof, but you need to think about keeping the blinds shut so that you can stop too much heat coming in.

  • Get your house air conditioning ready to go. Calling in an HVAC technician to get your air conditioning unit checked over is a smart move. Before the summer hits, you want to know that your conditioning unit is pumping out clean and fresh cool air for your home to enjoy. When you call out a technician, they'll work through the filters and get it all completely cleaned as well.

  • Freshen your decking outside. It's time to give the deck a clean down to get the pressure washer out and keep it on a light clean until you can make sure that you're not going to ruin your decking with the force of the water. You could use a brush and some soapy water as well, or you can simply just get it all cleaned down with a pressure hose.
