The Magical Art of Creating Space in a Small Home

The Magical Art of Creating Space in a Small Home

If you already live in your dream home and the area you can see yourself getting old in, then you are fortunate. But, what if you have small children and you know that as soon as they hit their teenage years, you are going to be cramped for space?

Getting innovative with our homes so that they can accommodate all our needs can be really exciting. There are some inventive ways of creating more space and adding extra rooms if you aren’t afraid of a little hard work. Not only is this great for your family, but it can also increase the value of your home. It’s worth understanding what popular new home features buyers are looking for, so you can think about the future as well as choosing something that works for you.

One of the most straightforward ways of extending our home space is to use outbuildings such as a garage or the garden. If you have a garage, you could do a conversion and create an annexe which could be turned into an Airbnb when your children leave home and will generate a little extra income. By adding an extra room outside your home, you could utilise the guest bedroom inside your home as an office for you and your partner, or as a playroom for the children. This could also mean your children have a bedroom each, so you don’t need to sell your house to be able to accommodate all of your family needs and a guest bedroom.

If you have the space in your garden, then you could create a fantastic bed and shower room or an outside office. There are some inventive ways of doing this, including shepherds huts or old wagons that have been transformed into all year living spaces.

If you want to think bigger then adding an extra floor to your home by converting the attic will give you a master bedroom to die for. You could create a glamorous room with a beautiful ensuite bathroom which will provide you with your own private oasis away from the children. This will also allow you to free up a large room in your home for a home office or kids lounge area, meaning you can reclaim your living room downstairs if the children want to watch movies or play computer games. Depending on the purpose you have in mind, you can decide on furniture that will help shape the space and define its navigability. Some utilities, like an adjustable desk for a home office, can also great you further utility even in small spaces.

Finally, if you are able to knock down a wall in your kitchen, opening up your separate kitchen and diner into a multi-functional room will add more light and modern looking space which works for the whole family. This will enable you to spend more time together while also making your downstairs feel more spacious and open. Perfect for dinner time where you will be able to talk to the kids as you make dinner and find out what they have been up to during the day!

You can find extra space in most homes and work to a variety of budgets. Just think outside the box and make your dream house the perfect place for you all to live.

Cheers!

Janelle
