4 Reasons Why Home Is So Cold

4 Reasons Why Home Is So Cold

There's nothing better than coming into a cozy, warm home after spending time outside in the chilled climate. Snuggling up on the sofa with a good book and a hot beverage, feelings of calm and peace will soon set in when you're in the comfort of your heated home.

Of course, we are assuming your home is warm. If the climate inside is as frosty as the temperature outside, something must be wrong somewhere. This is especially true when you have the heating on but still feel a nasty chill.

Fortunately, there are reasons why our homes tend to be cold, and we have some examples of why below.

#1: Your heating system needs maintenance

Unfortunately, heating systems don't function optimally forever. If there are signs that your boiler is about to die, or if your air conditioning doesn't seem to be working anymore, you might need to hire a professional. An expert in heating and air conditioning will assess what's wrong, fix any problems, and perhaps even suggest an upgraded boiler and heating system.

#2: There are problems with your air filter

Your heating and cooling system won't be able to function correctly if there are problems with the air filter. It needs to be cleaned or replaced every 3 months or so, as it traps debris that passes through your ventilation system. When the air filter becomes clogged, your system won't be able to push air through the ventilation pipes, and so you won't feel the full benefit of your A/C. Call on an expert for help or use the advice here for cleaning your air filter

#3: Cold air is leaking into your home

The heating might be working fine, but you won't experience the full benefit when you feel a draft of cold air on your skin. This problem arises when there are cracks and gaps around your door and window frames, and to solve the problem you will need to seal them. You can do this using polyurethane caulk or a bead of acrylic sealant. You should replace old weatherstripping too, especially when there are signs that it has become old and worn. As you can see in the following linked article, there are different types of weatherstripping, so choose whichever seems suitable for your home.

#4: Your home needs more insulation

When your home isn't insulated very well, you will lose a lot of your home's heat. To counter this problem, it is important to look at different ways of insulating your home. Attic insulations are common, but you could install double or triple-glazed windows around your home too, or opt for underfloor insulation. As a lot of heat can also pass through your walls, you might also consider cavity wall insulation. There will be an expense, no matter which option you choose, but you will save money in the long run when you are no longer forced to crank up the thermostat.

Finally

Your home is your sanctuary, so it is important to optimize your living conditions. If your house is too cold, you will struggle to rest and relax. So, consider our suggestions, and if any of them relate to your cold home, do what you can to make your living space warm and toasty again.
