How to Maximise the Light in Your Home

How to Maximise the Light in Your Home

Natural light in the home is so important. It doesn't matter how beautiful your decor is, if your home looks dark and dingy it will never be the stunning, impressive look that you’re after. Natural light is also good for your mental health, many of us have indoor jobs and spend a lot of time inside due to childcare and other care responsibilities so getting as much light in our indoor spaces as possible is important . It can create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, improve your sleep quality, and reduce things like eye strain and even accidents! Not all of us are blessed with homes which have enormous windows, many homes are built facing the wrong direction to maximise light and things like trees, buildings and other obstructions means we’re facing a battle before we even start. But there are some things we can do to keep everything looking as light, bright and airy as possible.

Choose the right window treatments

First things first, when it comes to choosing curtains and blinds for your home, be sure to keep in mind the goal of maximising the natural light. Go for sheer curtains or blinds in light colours as these will allow sunlight to filter through while maintaining privacy. Heavy or dark window coverings that can block natural light and make your space feel darker, as a way to control the light go with blinds. These can be easily opened and closed to control the amount of light coming in without blocking additional light. You could even go with curtains or blinds with light-reflective materials that can help bounce natural light around the room, creating a brighter and more inviting atmosphere.

Get reflective

Large mirrors, mirrored furniture and other reflective pieces are a great way to bounce light around a room and keep it looking as bright as possible. These are fantastic statement pieces that can make your home look elegant and luxurious with the added bonus of making it brighter too.

Choose the right colours

You dont need to be an interior designer to know that dark colours close in a room. Paint your walls in light neutrals, creams, whites and very light greys- these will all work well with any accent colour while ensuring that your rooms stay as bright and spacious looking as possible.

Get the artificial lighting right

Finally, regardless of how much you maximise the natural light you will always need to light your home when it gets dark. Spotlights can work better than a single overhead light, as well as wall sconces. Lamps with smart bulbs can adjust the brightness and even colour temperature of your home, and you can put them onto a timer so they always switch on at the correct time. To save money on your lighting bills as well as be more eco friendly, find a solar installer and consider having solar panels fitted. With the cost of living so high at the moment, this is a great way to reduce your bills in general.
