How to Create the Perfect Bedroom
Your bedroom is undoubtedly one of the most important rooms in your home. It may also be my favorite because it is where I go to sleep, the joys of sleep! After all, this is your safe space. It is the place that belongs to you and you alone, even if you share the rest of your living space with friends and family. It is the room in which you go to sleep, wake up, get dressed, and relax from the stresses of your day. Given its importance, a bedroom deserves the time and effort spent to craft it into a place of true joy. The perfect bedroom is one that is full of your personality, but also clean and sparse enough that it can clear your mind, something I always have a hard time doing with two young kiddos. Of course, the dream bedroom will be different for each person, depending on your individual style, taste, and needs. However, there are some elements that you can rely on in any circumstance, that can transform your bedroom from a normal room into the perfect sanctuary.
Colors
As with any room in your home, a color scheme will be a vitally important part of determining the character of your bedroom. Now, you may be tempted by darker, cozier colors, associating them with sleep - but don’t forget, your bedroom does not just send you to sleep, it also needs to wake you up in the morning. Darker colors will not help with this, as they will absorb light and make it harder for your brain to adjust to the day. Instead, consider soft, pastel shades of cream, eggshell blue, and even a very faint salmon. These shades will give you that feeling of coziness without compromising on light levels. As you enter your bedroom, you want to feel instantly rejuvenated and relaxed - lighter colors will do that for you.
Materials and Scents
Second only to colors is your choice of materials. Again, you might be tempted by heavy wools and furs. However, high-quality cottons and linens are much fresher, helping you to keep your space clean and airy as well as cozy. This cleanliness is super important in a space that you want to relax in, as it will also lead to cleaner air and therefore better health. If you want to add an even more soothing scent to your bedroom, consider using organic sources such as dried lavender, rather than any chemical air fresheners.
Drawers and Closets
A tidy closet is a sign of a tidy mind. Your perfect bedroom won’t only look good at first glance, it will also provide an organized and relaxing style of life. Investigate the best ways to sort and store your wardrobe, and if you have any problems with mustiness, look up how to maintain a fresh smelling closet for tips on how to deal with this. After all, you don’t want to start your day confronted by mothballs and odors every time you go to get dressed. It’s also useful to break down your drawers into as many compartments as you can, so you know exactly where everything is and you don’t have to waste time rummaging about for certain items. This is something I could use some work on, but it is on y to do list.
Flooring
Carpet or hard floors? This is a major consideration for bedrooms, and it is one that will depend on your preference. Hard wooden floors can look stylish and are much easier to clean, however, they can let the cold in more easily so might not be ideal if you live in a chillier area. On the other hand, carpets are great insulators but they can stain easily and they don’t look as good. A great compromise is to have a hardwood floor mostly covered by a luxury rug, allowing yourself the freedom to change it up, and to have the best of both worlds.
The Bed
Now we come to the centerpiece of your room; the bed. Having a comfortable bed is a fundamental part of creating the perfect bedroom. Again, this will differ depending on your preferences, but a perfect bed and mattress are a big investment, so it’s important to make the right decision. Do you prefer a hard or soft surface? What size do you need? What style do you want the headboard to be in? All these questions need answering. It’s worth shopping around, speaking to experts and making sure you know exactly what you want.
Mirrors
Most bedrooms these days are designed to have a mirror somewhere. This is helpful - so you can plan your outfits and do your make-up with ease. However, it is recommended that you place this mirror somewhere where you don’t always have to look into it, to protect your mental health. Make the mirror optional, either with a covering fabric or by its placement in the room, so you can choose whether or not to see yourself within it. This will help your bedroom feel like a safe, zen space of soothing rejuvenation.
Now off to create the next bedroom space in Carson’s room, stay tuned.
Cheers!
